The Unknown Guest
Started off as a speedpaint of a robot, but ended up turning into (almost) fanart for Bioshock.
About an hour and a half - two hours in photoshop.

Temporary Fault
Speedpaint, about an hour. Will fully render this if I have the time...
Drawn up using the same method as my last.

Whitewash
My computer can run Maya 2011, but barely. No point trying to animate if the computer can't stop lagging. I need something more powerful...
Speedpaint from last night, about 30 minutes.

Where are you going?
Totally botched this by saving the reduced sized, flattened image over the PSD file which contained all the individual layers and paths... don't you hate when that happens?
Logo for the band Medicine Lake from Baltimoar Maryland, check them out.

Sloop John B
Started teaching myself ZBrush today for the first time, and this is what I ended up with (after I painted it in Photoshop, of course).
ZBrush is an incredible program, I've completely fallen in love with it, and even grown accustom to it's odd interface (odd compared to Maya at least).
Planning on doing a few character portraits in this style, this one not included.
Time to sleep.

The Watcher's Monolith
Autumn has finally arrived in Savannah Georgia, two months later then I'm used to, but the temperatures are finally bearable (to me anyways).
Started listening to the new Agalloch album... then this happened. Still pushing/pulling values on it though, but I plan on finishing it completely.

Mind/Body/Light/Sound
First quarter of grad school is finished. I've never learned so much in such a short amount of time. I plan on making a post summing it all up within the next week or so, and will also be announcing a big project of mine I'm about to start with two classmates shortly afterwards (worth nothing, seriously).
In the meantime, here's a sample of another thing I'm working on. I cropped it cause I haven't rendered anything else. 70 degrees and sunny in late November. I love it.

Show of Shows
This year's Animated Show of Shows, a collection of animated shorts, was fantastic. Thank you Ron Diamond for coming to Savannah!
The adaption of Shaun Tan's "The Lost Thing" I found especially amazing. A film like that done by three people? Crazy.

What Happened?
Even if you're painting realistically, if it does not work on an abstract level, then it does not work. Period.
Same goes for animation.
I've known this for a while, but one of those things I always need to remind myself.
...suddenly Georgia got cold.

SKATE!
10+ hours of animating for 10 seconds of film. All emphasis on weight and movement. I'm a n00b at this still, gimme 2+ years to master it.
Long day. Bye.

Rivers Dancing
Two hour portrait, no references. Drawing hot girls is such a challenge, since any wrong brushwork will ruin the whole face... as opposed to drawing say, a wrinkly old man.
...yeah.
Pretty happy with this though. I am gonna try to do a few simple character portraits a week.

Skate!
Demonstrates a modified version of the Bloke 1.0 character riding a skateboard. Besides the character base, everything else was done by myself, including modeling, rigging, animating, and recording audio.
This will be online in a few days on my Vimeo page. I'll link to it once up.

The Great Annihilator
Work in progress animation for my character rigging class.
I love Maya. It is such an astounding piece of software. Highly intricate, powerful, yet simple at the same time. Complex yet intuitive. While a lot of amazing work has been crafted with it, the construction of the actual application is what I find the most fascinating.
The program is, in itself, a work of art.

Animus
Started this tonight, going to try to get it done (as well as another piece I'm working on) by the end of the week. I wish there were 36 hours in a day, instead of 24.
Once the semester ends in mid November I'm going to publish a long post documenting my first quarter of grad school.
Peace out from Georgia.

To Here Knows When
To the few that read this blog, I'll have updates resuming in a little bit. I'm currently overwhelmed with schoolwork and my job, but I haven't forgot about this.
As a real quick update, I'm getting my portfolio ready to apply for some big internships...

Michael Gira is a God Amongst Men
I haven't purchased an album in over five years, but I couldn't help but order a hard copy of My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky by Swans from Young God Records. Ever since discovering them, Swans became one of my favorite bands of all time, and I can't wait to hear what they have to show after their 14 year hiatus.
If you don't know Swans, check them out.

Oxygen
If determinism exists, and free will (in the traditional sense) does not, then things as they are *now* could not be any other way.
And this would make life... perfect.
A simple little animation I did, practicing squash n' stretch. Word.

Re-Re-Hash
Sitting in room 304 of Montgomery Hall, Savannah Georgia waiting for my first grad school class to start. Hate not having internet at my place, feel as if I'm living under a rock.
Anyways, threw some texture on this. Going to keep working it up until it's finished. Also gonna punch up the colors and add more variation to it.

My Father will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky
I'm a diehard SWANS fan, ignore my silly headlines. Another piece I started early today, going to fully render this once I can fix all the perspective errors. Will post more soon...
The heat down here is killing me. Being a true New England-er, 95 degree, humid Georgia weather is taking it's toll... but at least I'm finally outta Hartford. Life is good. :)

The Walls of Eden Prison
New piece I'm working on. Completely painted from my imagination (subtle textures aside). Trying to emphasize form and shape, so modeling the imagery in Maya will require less guess-work. Very happy with this one so far, but I got a bit of rendering to do on it before it's officially done.
One week until I get the internet at my house... can't wait. Moving to Savannah Georgia is, so far, the best choice I've ever made in life. I love it down here, so inspiring...

Let all them hounds off of their leashes...
Maya practice. Simple and blocky for now, I'll have more interesting work up once I actually start the intro to Maya class in the next two weeks...
Still without internet at my house, so updates won't be as frequent as I'd like.

Tomorrow Comes Today
First sketch in Georgia. I love Savannah, such a beautiful city... will definitely post some pictures soon.
Also, I'm without internet (posting this from Panera's cafe in downtown) so I may not be updating as much as I'd like to, but that'll be fixed sooner then later.

Quick doodle... Taking a short break from Maya, which is giving me a headache. The complexity of it is mind boggling...

Late Summer Blues
First attempt at actually making something in Maya other then basic shapes... gesture is horrible, but I'm slowly getting the hang of this whole 3D modeling thing.

Autodesk Maya
After studying enough of Blender, I've decided to jump straight into Maya... learning this will keep me busy for the rest of the summer.

Rout 84 Re-Visited
It's a weird feeling that I have three more weeks of living in Connecticut, then I move away for good. But...
More on that later, here's a doodle before I go to bed.

A Thanatopsis
Speedpaint before bed, took no more then 75 minutes. Been playing with a texturing technique where I'll copy the entire image onto a new layer, and set the opacity to 10-35%, then reshape the new layer to use it as a texture to increase visual noise. Speeds up the painting process, and you can get some neat effects with it...
It's nice to do an environment piece, after all the character studies I've been forcing myself to do.

I've never once cried during a movie... but I almost did during the final scene of Toy Story 3. The people of Pixar truly are gods amongst men. I can't wait to start school next fall!

Asphalt, Vinegar +Yellow, and a full moon
Sunday afternoon doodle. I've developed a new method for doing line art, by laying down loose lines then finishing their placement by using the smudge tool. This helps me maintain solidity in my linework, and keeps the gesture of the character or object dynamic. Being the type of person who visualizes form over line, this method is working very well for me so far. I might color this tomorrow... who knows.
On an unrelated note, I'm almost done with the 5th Harry Potter book (that I'm reading via audiobook at work) and I now realize I should have read these books ages ago. So good!
